Dans "l'atelier de l'historien" sont évoqués des thèmes renouvelés et/ou suscitant toujours des questionnements, voire des controverses : ainsi, l'historiographie, les pamphlets et images, les élections, la vente des biens nationaux, la première abolition de l'esclavage, la place et le rôle des femmes, la singularité de la Révolution française dans ce qui fut nommé "Révolution atlantique". Les études les plus récentes sont ainsi rassemblées pour la première synthèse d'importance en ce début du XXIe siècle.
